Surgical First Assistant
Job Description:
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide direct assistance to surgeons during procedures, ensuring the highest level of patient care.
• Support with instrument handling, tissue retraction as required.
• Ensure aseptic techniques are maintained throughout procedures.
• Assist in preparing the operating theatre, ensuring all equipment and surgical instruments are correctly set up.
• Monitor patient condition intraoperatively, reporting any concerns to the surgical team.
• Participate in post-operative care, including wound dressing and patient monitoring.
• Work closely with anaesthetists, theatre nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless surgical procedures.
• Adhere to infection control, health & safety, and clinical governance standards.
Requirements:
• Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with valid registration.
• Recognised Surgical First Assistant qualification.
• Experience working in theatres as a Surgical First Assistant.
• Strong understanding of perioperative care and theatre protocols.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
